Measures to Improve Concentration & Productivity when Studying
Concentration in Studies |
Before we start discussing, first let's recall some most negative statements made on us -
" Why you can't Concentrate? "
" Why you are not able to study? "
I think these are the 2 most common questions one can face in his whole life. Not being able to concentrate or focus can haunt a person from childhood until the later stage of adulthood & this could have such an adverse effect on their personal as well as their professional life.
Not being able to study is an outcome of not having good concentration level which is one big concern which must be addressed if you are willing to change your life. Now if we ask another simple question
Why does one study?
The answer to this question would vary from one individual to another as it depends on the final outcome they are trying to achieve through studying. If we take an example of three people who have their own reasons to study. The first one studies in the hope of making a lot of money. The second one studies in the longings to fame. Third one studies to leave an impact on the society by his experiments and his works. And many more people may have their respective reasons to study.
That one common thing you observe in these three people is that they have a certain reason to study. And here is the catch. You should have a reason to study then you will do it.
One may say that yes I have a solid reason to study still I'm unable to focus and keep my concentration for a longer time.
Although, we have a reason to study it's not sufficient. We must also have a burning desire to back our decision and reason to study. You should keep asking yourself a question at regular intervals whenever you are going to do something that is " Will this thing add value to build me? ", If yes, just go on and do it and if not just go on and do what will make you worthy of what you want to become.
Now here is scientifically tested procedure to boost up your studies only thing is you need to show dedication & believe in the following
- Introspection
It is the best way to find a reason to study and repeated introspection is the only way to keep on the track and maximise your focus towards study.
- Spaced repetition
Learn a bit of information. Then wait for some time. Try Recalling and reviewing it again after a few minutes. Then wait.. do something else. Again Recall/review it in the next 20 minutes, then in 1 hour, then in 4, etc. The continuous Review/recall verification procedure of information with increasing time intervals helps in remembering for a long time.
- Interleaving
Study-related concepts in a pseudo-parallel. That is, not studying one topic for a long time & then starting with the next one. If you have 3 related topics - A, B, C, most people study AAAAA BBBBB CCCCC. Interleaving is ABC ABC ABC ABC ABC. Interleaving is more efficient.
- Chunking
Group information together in meaningful small bites. It is easier to go through the chunked information and use its own group members to support each other concerning memory.
Meta-cognition: Think & reflect on your study material in a way that is not too academic. Freely think and ponder over it. Let your brain swim in it.
- Retrieval practice
Absorbing information is only one part of the puzzle, but remembering and reproducing learned content is a completely different ball game. You can practice recalling your learned material.
- Know your distractions
To eliminate the distraction you have to know the sources of your distractions. Until unless you know your distractions, you can’t defeat them. Major sources of distractions in student life are Mobile, Family, Friends etc.
Productivity quotes from the best |
You need to avoid those distractions in all possible manner to gain control of the situation and here are some strategies which could be implemented easily
- Plan a schedule for yourself and follow it
It should be made considering the study duration in your mind. Make a commitment to yourself that you will sit at least one hour on the study table and put your heart and mind in the study. Keep your phone on aeroplane mode when you sit to study.
SUCCESS IS ABOUT DOING THOSE THINGS THAT WE FEEL NOT TO DO.
When anyone feels stressed or completely exhausted then s/he must relax for sometime….maybe 15 - 20 minutes. There is no need to study when stress levels are extreme as it doesn't help in boosting productivity.
In your free time, you can develop reading inspirational quotations and stories of great men that can help you trace the path where you would like to walk & filling your mind with new ideas driven by those stories rather than scrolling through WhatsApp and Facebook posts.
YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE TIME, YOU NEED TO MAKE TIME.
You need to be smart enough to realize your potential. If you can do 5 things in a day, try to challenge yourself for doing 10 or 15 things (as an example). Whenever you face a challenge, that automatically ignites you emotionally & there your desire to work increases.
NO ONE KNOWS YOU BETTER THAN YOU. ANALYSE IT, DREAM AND WORK TOWARDS ACHIEVING OF YOUR DREAMS.
- Build a habit to study in a way that you get to learn & understand something daily
Try to do a qualitative and quantitative study. It is simple. Increase your study duration regularly (or as per possible ways) and invest something worth it in the increased duration.
SUCCESS IS THE SUM OF ALL THOSE SMALL EFFORTS THAT YOU REPEAT DAY IN AND DAY OUT.
Never think that you have to satisfy somebody or fulfil someone else's requirements with your work but yes, you definitely have to stand by the expectations of others. So do the work in a way where you get satisfaction rather than success because once you are contented with it, no one can prevent you from achieving heights.
Remember,
WORKING FOR SUCCESS WILL MAKE YOU A MASTER BUT WORKING FOR THE SATISFACTION THAT COULD BE REALISED IN YOUR MIND WILL MAKE YOU A LEGEND.
- Clear all the distractions
Turn off your phone and any other technology, these could interfere with your concentration. If you need a computer or in case a tablet or phone to facilitate your study schedule then uses apps that block social media.
- Create the right environment
Specific lighting is recommended to be used when you are studying. Light music with no words. Keep an organized environment to concentrate & remove anything unnecessary.
- Take breaks
Walk around, make tea, or stretch. This process is important because of the Reticular Formation, a part of your brain that is linked with concentration. Whenever you focused too long, your brain gets switched off disallowing you to take in information.
- Study buddies (be careful)
Study buddies are fantastic for bouncing ideas off of and double-checking work. You can have a quiz and keep each other on track. One of the best ways to remember concepts is by teaching them to others. BUT! Be careful. Study buddies can be distracting if they happen to be good friends who like conversing.
The brain consists of up to 60% fat, therefore, you need to eat healthy fats such as salmon, avocados and almonds. Stay hydrated and drink enough water a day. Daily exercises are part of a productive routine that includes keeping your heart rate up & one must practice it regularly after all we all know that a sound mind lives in a sound body. You will eventually feel good about yourself & will be motivated to take new information.
- plan your study-day properly
Spread the whole load across different times. Some in the morning, some at night and so on..
Early morning and late-night hours are found to be favourable for complex learning.
Languages, History and Environment are better assimilated during early mornings, say from 4am to 7am.
Mathematics, Science is better followed at nights.. 9pm to 12am.
- Combine writing along with reading
- It is always better to take very short breaks in between your studies, to refresh your mind and to clear boredom.
- Read the chapters several times to assimilate information better. While reading, make notes of important points on paper. Noting down helps. (Refer to the procedure mentioned in this article)
- Munching something in between, while studying is helpful to recharge, and also to drive away from the boredom.
- Studying is not just reading. It's going deep into the subject. So know that you have to go deep.
- Maintain your sleep pattern well. You need proper sleep too. Sleep deficiency can impair learning. Sleep for eight hours a day. Sleep some time during the day too to compensate for the loss of night.
- Be fresh and active while you study.
It took a while to collect all these important points, after going through tons of journals & listening speech after speech on how to improve study time concentration / the concentration levels so if you practice the mentioned, it is almost guaranteed that you are going to change your current scenario for sure.
Wishing you all the best in your journey to become the ultimate version of yourself :)
